Portraits of the Mind: Visualizing the Brain from Antiquity to the 21st Century by Carl Schoonover

Dermot Sweeny Visits CEOs of The Hudson Valley to Chat and Discuss New Visions for Smart Human Comfort Workspaces.
Our invited speaker is internationally distinguished architect Dermot J Sweeny of Sweeny, Sterling & Finlayson (www.andco.com) of Toronto.
Dermot Sweeny and company have designed approximately 4,500,000 square feet of leading world-class, energy-efficient, LEED strategic, human comfort workspaces.
In this conference, Dermot will be discussing how Fortune 500 companies are thinking about:
1) Attraction, Retention and Protection of Human Resources. Good people are costly to find, need thoughtful and flexible work-spaces, and are very costly to lose. Smart companies are providing the smart workplaces that tell employees “we believe in you”.
2) Thoughts of the Next Generation of Workers. The next generation of workers are interested in health, cleanliness, responsibility and sustainability. They demand fresh air and daylight.
3) The True Costs of Office Space: Understand the savings in operations today, and the cumulative costs as energy costs continue to soar. Examples include why companies are saving $10 or more per square feet in total = gross rent in the ultra-modern 1.2 million square feet RBC center (http://rbccentre.ca/). What are the cost implications for tomorrow?
4) Understand the Flexibility of Fast Companies: Especially today, to survive, companies need to think fast, move people and teams, create new functions and re-invent the workspace.
5) Know the Available Modern Technologies that Improve Human Comfort and Diminish Operating Costs. Technologies include the daylight harvesting system, current status of curtain walls, under-floor air distribution, and personalized plenums for hot and cold air delivery.
This meeting will occur at sunset on the Hudson on November 9, 2010, at the Garrison Golf Club (http://www.thegarrison.com/special_events.html.)

New York Spine Surgery & Rehabilitation Medicine Video Shows Helen Daniels, Centurion, Endures 1.5 Years after Balloon Kyphoplasty Spine Surgery
New York Spine Surgery & Rehabilitation Medicine Video Shows Helen Daniels, Centurion, Endures 1.5 Years after Balloon Kyphoplasty Spine Surgery
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Helen Daniels who is now 101.5 years old lives in her home in Poughkeepsie, New York. We visited her one and a half years after balloon kyphoplasty surgery and she is doing well, enjoying her life with her family. This video (http://blog.drken.us/) is the 18 months follow-up to see how she is doing since having surgery at age 100. In this video Helen answers questions about the important matters of her life. An animation of her surgery is shown. Then the viewer gets to see her walk.
“Unfortunately, many of my younger patients in their 80’s are not candidates for spinal surgery because of medical problems”
In December 2008, suddenly without warning, Helen sustained 2 vertebral compression fractures of the spine. This condition is most commonly caused by osteoporosis, but also can result from some forms of cancer. An estimated 750,000 spinal fractures a year occur in the U.S. alone due to weakened bones from osteoporosis. Her pain was so severe that she was unable to walk or stand. Indeed, she was bed and wheelchair bound for 3 months. She was evaluated by her medical doctor Rajiv Narula who attempted brace and medication therapy without relief. Dr. Narula referred the patient to Orthopedic Spine Specialist Dr. Kenneth Hansraj of New York Spine Surgery & Rehabilitation Medicine (www.DrKen.us). “She was remarkable in that she had no medical problems, passed a full cardiac stress test, and carried out a brilliant conversation” opined Dr. Hansraj. “Unfortunately, many of my younger patients in their 80’s are not candidates for spinal surgery because of medical problems” he noted.
Balloon Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive spinal procedure that includes the insertion of an Orthopedic Balloon into the vertebral body. This creates a void and potentially restores vertebral height. Polymethylmethacrylate cement is inserted under fluoroscopic guidance to stabilize the vertebral fracture and prevents further collapse. Helen underwent augmentation of 2 levels in 35 minutes of surgery performed by Dr. Kenneth Hansraj with Physician Assistant Sohail Safdari at Saint Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, New York, when she was 100 years old.
